New Moon

“"Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life." (Oscar Wilde, "The Decay of Lying")

"If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore, and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God?" (Emerson, R.W. (1840). "Nature". Chapter 1)

For Shōei, the new moon is a special entity. This is because he believes that there is no relative distinction between artificial and natural objects, and that technology is also a part of nature. Humans are products of nature, and the elements that make up artificial objects also exist in nature.

On the other hand, people are more likely to notice a full moon and less likely to notice a new moon. Therefore, he creates LED sculptures and exhibits them at various solo and group shows on the day of the new moon. This is an attempt to visualize the invisible and to visually represent the time of darkness that has become invisible in urban areas.
