世界でもっとも使用された絵文字「笑い泣き」をモチーフにした《The Laughing Man》シリーズのプリント作品です。相反する感情を内包するこの絵文字は、送り手と受け手、使用される状況によって、喜び、悲しみ、皮肉、困惑などさまざまな意味へと変化します。

松田はこの複雑でありながら世界中で共有される表情を、ネットワーク社会における感情とコミュニケーションの象徴として捉えてきました。本作では、3DCGによってデジタル空間に存在する絵文字に光沢や奥行き、陰影を与え、一枚のイメージとして定着させています。

本作は、2024年にFOAM CONTEMPORARY（東京・銀座）で開催された個展「Laughism」（主催：銀座 蔦屋書店）で発表されたシリーズを、247mm角の新たなフォーマットとして再構成したエディションです。全12色のカラーバリエーションで展開され、各色5点限定で制作されています。ECサイトおよびBnA Alter Museum（京都）にて、期間限定で販売します。

This print belongs to The Laughing Man series, which takes as its motif the “face with tears of joy,” the world’s most widely used emoji. Containing seemingly contradictory emotions, the emoji can take on a range of meanings—including joy, sadness, irony, and confusion—depending on the sender, the recipient, and the context in which it is used.

Matsuda has regarded this complex yet universally shared expression as a symbol of emotion and communication in a networked society. In this work, 3DCG is used to give the emoji—an image originating in digital space—a sense of gloss, depth, light, and shadow, fixing it as a single image.

This edition reconfigures the series presented in Laughism, Matsuda’s 2024 solo exhibition at FOAM CONTEMPORARY in Ginza, Tokyo, organized by Ginza Tsutaya Books, in a new 247 mm square format. The work is available in 12 color variations, with each color produced in a limited edition of five. It is available for a limited time through this online store and at BnA Alter Museum in Kyoto.
