過去10年間に世界で最も使用された絵文字のひとつ、「笑い泣き」の表情をモチーフにした《The Laughing Man》シリーズのプリント作品です。

笑いながら泣いているという相反する感情を内包するこの絵文字は、送り手と受け手、あるいは使用される状況によって、喜び、悲しみ、皮肉、困惑など、さまざまな意味へと変化します。

松田将英は、この複雑でありながら世界中で共有されている表情を、ネットワーク社会における感情とコミュニケーションの象徴として捉えてきました。本作では、3DCGによって、デジタル空間に存在する絵文字に光沢や奥行き、陰影を与え、一枚のイメージとして定着させています。

全12色のカラーバリエーションで展開され、各色5点限定で制作されています。

本作は、2024年にFOAM CONTEMPORARY（東京・銀座）で開催された個展「Laughism」（主催：銀座 蔦屋書店）で発表されたシリーズを、247mm角の新たなフォーマットとして再構成したエディションです。ECサイトおよびBnA Alter Museum（京都）にて、期間限定で販売します。

This print is part of The Laughing Man series, which takes as its motif the “face with tears of joy” emoji—one of the most widely used emojis of the past decade.

Combining the seemingly contradictory emotions of laughter and tears, the emoji can convey a wide range of meanings, including joy, sadness, irony, and confusion, depending on the sender, the recipient, and the context in which it is used.

Shōei Matsuda regards this complex yet universally shared expression as a symbol of emotion and communication in a networked society. In this work, the emoji is rendered through 3DCG, giving its digital form a sense of gloss, depth, light, and shadow before fixing it as a single image.

The work is available in 12 color variations, with each color produced in a limited edition of five.

This edition reconfigures the series presented in Matsuda’s 2024 solo exhibition Laughism at FOAM CONTEMPORARY in Ginza, Tokyo, organized by Ginza Tsutaya Books, in a new 247 mm square format. It is available for a limited time through this online store and at BnA Alter Museum in Kyoto.
