松田はこの複雑でありながら世界中で共有される表情を、ネットワーク社会における感情とコミュニケーションの象徴として捉えてきました。本作では3DCG制作にKai Yoshizawaを迎え、デジタル空間に存在する絵文字に光沢や奥行き、陰影を与えながら、一枚のイメージとして定着させています。

本作は、389mm角のフォーマットで制作された《The Laughing Man》シリーズのモノトーンエディションです。色彩を抑えた構成により、絵文字が持つ表情の曖昧さ、記号性、彫刻的な質感をより静かに浮かび上がらせています。100点限定で制作され、ECサイトにて再販します。

This print belongs to The Laughing Man series, which takes as its motif the “face with tears of joy,” the world’s most widely used emoji. Containing seemingly contradictory emotions, the emoji can take on a range of meanings—including joy, sadness, irony, and confusion—depending on the sender, the recipient, and the context in which it is used.

Matsuda has regarded this complex yet universally shared expression as a symbol of emotion and communication in a networked society. For this work, Kai Yoshizawa was invited to produce the 3DCG, giving the emoji—an image originating in digital space—a sense of gloss, depth, light, and shadow, and fixing it as a single image.

This work is a monochrome edition of The Laughing Man series, produced in a 389 mm square format. With its restrained use of color, the work quietly brings out the ambiguity, symbolic quality, and sculptural presence of the emoji. Produced in a limited edition of 100, it is being re-released through this online store.
